Variety fare for Deepavali
Arjun and Simran in "Ottran".
TAMIL FILMS, generally, are released to coincide with festivals celebrated with enthusiasm by the people of the State. The best, however, is reserved for Deepavali. Movie lovers will not be disappointed this year with quite a few numbers hitting the silver screen on October 24. The most looked-forward-to film this time is Evergreen Movie International's "Pithamagan." With two of the much sought-after actors in the Tamil industry Vikram and Surya acting in this film, and director Bala shaping it up, it is expected to make a mark.
Ajit and Meera Jasmine in "Anjaneya".
The director says the movie has no duets. "Vikram is the Vettiyan and he meets Surya, a fraud, in jail. Laila is a young girl who is deceived by Surya. How these three characters come together without each other's knowledge is the story. According to Vikram, the character he plays is unusual, not portrayed so far. There are only four songs in the film. Simran, who is an actress in the film, pitches in only for a dance number. Another highlight of the film is the music of Ilaiyaraaja. Produced by V. A. Durai, the film is cinematographed by Balasubramanim, lyrics are by Vaalee, Pazhani Barathi and Na. Muthukumar, dance has been choreographed by Brinda, editing by Suresh Ars, fights by Stunt Siva and art direction by A. C. Pillai. Story, screenplay, dialogue and direction are by Bala. After nearly a year's hibernation, Ajith is back in action with Nic Arts' "Anjaneya." Ajith is said to have worked overtime for the film in which he is portrayed as a policeman. This role has been lucky for heroes like MGR (several films), Sivaji Ganesan ("Thangapadhakkam"), Rajnikanth ("Moondru Mugam"), Kamal Haasan ("Kakhi Sattai), and the latest has been Surya ("Kaakha Kaakha"). Ajith, paired with Meera Jasmine in the film, has his fingers crossed and wants it to be a Deepavali release. Director Maharajan of "Vallarasu" fame, and currently busy with the Arjun starrer, "Arasaatchi" is directing this film. The cast also includes Raghuvaran, P. Vasu, Manivannan, Ponnambalam, Girish Karnad, Seetha, Vinu Chakravarthy, Kovai Sarala, Ramesh Khanna and Vaiyapuri. Camera is by P. Selvakumar, music by Mani Sharma, art by Mani Raj and lyrics are by Vairamuthu and Kabilan. Stunts are by Kanal Kannan and Peter Hain, dances by Raju Sundaram and Kalyan. S. S. Chakravarthy is the producer and story, screenplay, dialogue and direction are by Maharajan.
Vijay and Jyothika in "Tirumalai".
Ramana is making his debut directing Vijai and Jyothika in "Thirumalai" for Kavithalaya. An assistant to R. K. Selvamani so far, Ramana is brimming with confidence: "For me, this film is an amalgamation of a good screenplay with mature acting by Vijai and Jothika. The hero is a Chennai youth who falls in love with a wealthy girl. How their love is acknowledged by the girl's family has been portrayed in a different way. It is the screenplay which will make the audience sit glued to their seats." Karunaus, Raghuvaran, Kausalya, Krishna, Manoj K. Jayan and Anju Mahendra are in supporting roles. Vidyasagar has scored the music while Arivumathi and Kabilan have written the lyrics. R. Rathnavelu has cranked the camera and editing is by Suresh Urs. Art direction is by K.Kadir and stunts are by Peter Hyen. Pushpa Kandasamy has produced the film, and the story, screenplay, dialogue and direction are by Ramana. For Arjun, it is "Ottran". Director Ilankannan, who is also making his directorial debut, justifies the title saying, "The hero is an RAW officer, who has immense respect for his motherland. Arjun comes in the guise of a sweeper, beggar and a culinary expert in the film." The director has been an assistant to Pavithran, Aabavanan and Shanker. The film, shot in New Delhi, Goa and Chennai, includes Simran, Manorama, Sarath Babu, Ambika, Vivek, Vadivelu, Thejashree, Chitibabu, Anumohan and Shyam Ganesh in the cast. Praveen Mani has scored the music, and Saravanan has wielded the camera. Art direction is by Thotta Tharani, editing by P. Sai Suresh, and graphics is by Venki. Kanthilal Bansali is the producer, and story, screenplay, dialogue and direction are by Ilankannan.
