Showcasing cane craft
THE GOLDEN hues of cane and bamboo set the tone for the North East Crafts Fair, which showcases the rich tapestry of the region's craft culture.
There are cane sofa sets, settees and chairs, dining tables, cupboards, sideboards and many more. Ethereal, delicately crafted and woven screens and blinds from Tripura are among the most beautiful bamboo items from the North East.
From Assam come cane sofa sets, occasional teapoys etc. The ingenuity of the craftsperson can be seen in the ways in which cane is presented in the sturdy furniture items.
Beautiful cane and bamboo basketry from Tripura, Manipur, Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland show the diverse and distinctive skills of the region's craftspersons. In fact, the cane and bamboo artefacts alone make a visit to the `North East Crafts Fair' worthwhile, both in terms of their aesthetics and their very moderate prices. Other interesting items on display are colourful Naga shawls and jackets, beautiful tussar and muga silk saris from Assam as well as Manipur's distinctive textiles.
The Fair has been organised by Purbashree and sponsored by the Office of the Development Commissioner, Handicrafts, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The venue is Sri Sankara Hall, 267, TTK Road, Alwarpet. The Fair concludes on February 19.
