The fare this season

More than half a dozen films are expected to hit the screens this Pongal and as usual some of them have raised a lot of expectations. S.R. ASHOK KUMAR lists the releases in the offing.


A `Crazy' comic treat from Kamal and Mouli... "Pammal K. Sambandham".

MORE THAN half a dozen films are expected to be released this Pongal, and top in the list is Kamal Haasan's "PKS", which is said to be a laugh riot.

It has become a practice for Kamal Haasan to do a serious film like "Hey Ram" followed by a comedy like "Thenali". Now after "Aalavandhan", it is going to be "Pammal K.Sambandam" in which he is acting as a stuntman who is not interested in marriage. The dialogue is by `Crazy' Mohan and direction is by Mouli, who has a penchant for comedy on stage as well as cinema.

The hero tries to help his friend Abbas who is in love with Sneha. On Sneha's side it is Simran who thinks for her. At one point Kamal and Simran are made to meet and this turns out to be the starting point of their love. How a person who is not interested in marriage is made to accept it is told with humour.

The star cast consists of Kamal Haasan, Simran, Abbas, Sneha, Ravichandran, Manivannan, Ramesh Kanna, Vaiyapuri, Unnikrishnan, Kuyili, M.N.Rajam, Nithya and Charlie. Camera is handled by Saravanan, music is scored by Deva, art is by G.K., editing is by Kasi Viswanathan and stills are by Suresh Merlin.

The songs have been penned by Vaalee, Pa.Vijay and Kabilan. Choreography is by Brinda, Tharun and Ashok. Screenplay and direction are by Mouli.

One is going to see a different Ajit in this Pongal fare. He is the Madurai dada and yet a good person. How can a dada be a good person ? This is the crux of the story of NIC Arts "Red", which stands for Revolution, Education and Development. Action, sentiment, love and glamour all rolled into one with a message, is the film, says director Ramsathya. This is his first film and he is exceedingly careful to see that it becomes a box office hit.

The cast includes Manivannan, Rajan P.Dev, Raghuvaran, Revathi, Vindhiya, Charlie, Salim Gouse, Madan Bob, Rajesh and "Nizhalgal" Ravi. Camera-Rajasekar, music-Deva, lyrics- Vairamuthu, fights-Kanal Kannan, dance-Raju Sundaram, art-Sabhu Cyril, editing-Srikar Prasad. The story, screenplay, dialogue and direction are by Ramsathya. The film is produced by S.S.Chakravarthy.

Bharathiraaja's Manoj Creations is coming out with a new film, "Alli Arjuna". This is the first time that Bharathiraaja is not directing his home production. The director is Saran who has given hits like "Amarkalam" and "Parthaen Rasithaen".

Manoj K. Bharathi is the hero and Richa Pallot is the heroine. The others in the cast include Vaiyapuri, Charlie, Dhamu, Karan, Vinu Chakravarthi, "Nizhalgal" Ravi and Fathima Babu. Director Saran has dealt with the subject of eve-teasing. Comedy has taken a front seat. The music is by A.R.Rahman.

Camera is cranked by Venkat, art is by Mohana Mahendran, dances are choreographed by Brinda, Cool Jayanth and Lawrence, editing has been taken care of by Suresh Urs and lyrics have been penned by Vairamuthu. Story, screenplay, dialogue and direction are by Saran.

For cameraman turned director Thankar Bachchan it is a dream come true. The story revolves round a couple and a girl. The girl and the man are childhood friends and when they meet after 15 years where their relationship stands and how they react, are to be seen on the screen. The girl is portrayed by Nandita Das and the man is Parthibhan.


Sentiment, romance, action, glamour... "Red" promises all these and more.

The highlight of the film is the music, which is scored by Ilaiyaraaja who has also written four songs. The other two songs are written by Pazhani Bharathi. For Nandita Das it is a good opportunity to show her prowess. She also says that the film is bound to create an impact.

The star cast comprises Shayaji Shinde, Devayani, Vivek, Vadivelu, Dr.K.Gunasekaran, Kumaravel and Aravind Bachchan, the son of director Thankar Bachchan. Editing is done by Lenin and Vijayan, art is by the national award winning art director K. Krishnamurthy. Story, screenplay, dialogue, cinematography and direction are by Thanker Bachchan.

After ``Ennamma Kannu'' and ``Looty'' producer V.A.Durai has come out with``Vivaramana Aalu''with Satyaraj in the lead. With all the ingredients to make it a box office hit the film has Devayani and Mumtaz as heroines. According to the director as the story is different, actor Satyaraj has given bulk dates. Satyaraj's dialogue delivery in the film will also be different . One will certainly like the hero for his style". The others in the cast include Vivek, Prathap Pothan, Vinu Chakravarthi, Senthil, Ponnambalam, Vaiyapuri, Ilavarasu and Mayilsami.

An out and out family entertainer, the film has music by Deva. The camera is handled by Vijai Chakravarthi, editing is taken care of by B.Lenin and V.T.Vijayan, story is by G.Ramalingam, stills are by L. Ramani, art is by Chandu, lyrics are penned by Pa.Vijai and Na.Muthukumar, stunts are composed by `Kanal' Kannan and the dances are choreographed by `Cool' Jayanth. The film is produced by V.A.Durai and the screenplay, dialogue and direction are by Selvabharathi.

Saanthi Vanaraja movies "Kamaraasu" deals with a selfless person who serves society and does not expect anything in return. Srividya is the owner of a factory. Murali works in her house as a driver. But Srividya treats him like her son. Murali takes care of the house and he is ready to sacrifice his life for her.

How the director has taken the film to a different plane is to be seen on the silver screen. Murali, Laila, Vadivelu, `Vennira Adai' Nirmala, Srividya, Chandrasekar, Madan Bob, Anu Mohan, C.R.Saraswathi and master Mahendran are the others in the cast.

Editing is by Jaishanker, dances are by Sivashanker and Raju Sundaram, music is by S.A.Raj Kumar and lyrics are by Mu.Metha, Muthulingam, Kalidasan, and Arivumathi. Art is by Pugazh and the story, screenplay, dialogue and direction are by P.C.Anbazhagan.

Supergood Film's "Punnagai Desam" is an out and out family oriented subject. It has four heroes in Tharun Kumar (Roja Ramani's son), Kunal, Amsavridhan and Dhamu. The two heroines are Sneha and Pritha. All the four are friends and one among them is a good singer. How each one of them helps another to come up in life, is told with interesting scenes by the director. The film is directed by K.Shahjahan, who is making his debut with the film.

The cast includes Malaysia Vasudevan, Vijaya Chandrika, `Nizhalgal' Ravi, Madan Bob, Vadivukkarasi, Vinu Chakravarthi, `Pasi' Sathya, Mayilsamy and Sabitha Anand. Camera is handled by S.Mathi. Music is scored by S.A.Rajkumar. Lyrics are penned by Vali, Ravishanker, Kalai Kumar, Viveka and Pa.Vijai. Art is by Remy. Editing is done by V.Jaishanker. Dances are choreographed by Tharun Kumar, Raju Sundaram, Cool Jayanth and Suchitra. Produced by R.B.Chowdry the film's story, screenplay, dialogue and direction are by K.Shahjahan.

"Kadhale Suvasam", and "Ammaiyappa" are the other films expected to join the Pongal race.
