Interesting tarangams

CELEBRATING ITS fifth annual tarangam festival in memory of Narayana Tirtha, saint and composer, the Thirupoonthuruthi Narayana Tirtha Swamigal Trust featured a three-day series of recitals and bhajans at Sringeri Pravachana Mandiram in Raja Annamalaipuram from December 7.

The recital of O. S. Thyagarajan presented as the inaugural concert revealed his enthusiasm to sing the tarangams of Narayana Tirtha in pleasing musical forms. His selection of songs set to different talas made the recital have a metrically interesting progression.

The singer gave an outline of Hamsavinodini with command over its scalar details and completed it with a neat execution of the tarangam, `Charanam thava' set to Rupaka tala. The piece was concluded with a smart session of swaras. T. K. V. Ramanujacharlu's accompaniment on the violin was mellow. B. Harikumar (mridangam) and Thirumangudi S. Sairam (kanjira) drew enjoyable percussion patterns.
