Telgi scam: hearing adjourned

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI DEC. 2. The Supreme Court today adjourned by two weeks the hearing of a petition seeking a CBI probe into the Rs. 30,000-crore stamp paper scam. A three-judge Bench, comprising the Chief Justice V.N. Khare, Justice Ashok Bhan and Justice A.R. Lakshmanan, adjourned the hearing after asking the petitioner, Ajay K. Agarwal, advocate, to implead the States concerned as the necessary parties. At present, he had cited only the Centre as the respondent.

The petitioner submitted that original dyes and machines were used for printing the stamp papers and that thousands of people across many State were involved in the racket.

A number of police officers were found to be involved and leaders of different political parties, Ministers and MLA had come under a cloud. This posed a great threat to national security.

The petition said that though the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, had declared that the Centre was ready for a CBI inquiry, Maharashtra and Karnataka were not making the request as "political bigwigs" were allegedly involved.
