Mulayam forms Jumbo Ministry

By J.P. Shukla

LUCKNOW Oct. 3. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, today inducted 91 new Ministers into his Cabinet thereby giving the largest ever Ministry to the State. The Cabinet now has 98 Ministers.

The largest Ministry earlier, comprising 95 Ministers, was constituted by the former BJP Chief Minister, Kalyan Singh, in 1996. Incidentally, Mr. Kalyan Singh is now a partner of Mr. Yadav in the State Government.

Among the Ministers sworn in today, 24 are of Cabinet rank and the rest Ministers of State. No Minister of State has been given independent charge. The Government simultaneously announced the nomination of six legislators as heads of various public corporations. The State Samajwadi Party president, Ram Saran Das, who has been nominated Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Commission, enjoys the status of Cabinet Minister. Most of the MLAs supporting his Government are from the BSP, having joined the SP after severing their relations with the BSP.

While all the allies of Mr. Yadav were represented in the Ministry, the Congress which is among the supporters of the Government has been an exception.
