3 killed in shootout near court

BHUBANESWAR SEPT. 26. Two armed men were killed in an encounter after they fatally attacked Kanta Das a murder accused near the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Jharsuguda town today. The incident took place around 11.30 a.m. when the unidentified assailants hurled a bomb and fired at Kanta Das, who was being taken to the court along with other accused persons. He was rushed to the local hospital where the doctors declared him "brought dead''.

Das, who was in judicial custody, was an accused in the case pertaining to the killing of Shyam Sundar Kedia, a local Congress leader who was shot dead in the town in May this year. Soon after attacking Das, the duo scaled a wall and took shelter in a nearby bush.

The policemen on duty, however, cordoned off the place and shot them in an encounter that lasted about 45 minutes.

The Jharsuguda police are investigating.
