Das, who was in judicial custody, was an accused in the case pertaining to the killing of Shyam Sundar Kedia, a local Congress leader who was shot dead in the town in May this year. Soon after attacking Das, the duo scaled a wall and took shelter in a nearby bush. The policemen on duty, however, cordoned off the place and shot them in an encounter that lasted about 45 minutes. The Jharsuguda police are investigating.
