Retirement benefits: SC query to Govt.

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI AUG. 25. The Supreme Court today asked the Bihar Government to indicate whether it had made provisions for payment of retirement benefits to employees in the Rs. 50 crores deposited with the High Court for payment of salaries to the employees.

A Bench comprising the Chief Justice, V.N. Khare, and Justice S.B. Sinha gave this direction to counsel for the State during the hearing of a petition filed by the Federation of Public Undertakings Employees and Workers Union alleging non-payment of retirement benefits to several of the retired employees.

The Bench directed that this petition be tagged on with the main petition relating to non payment of salaries and adjourned the proceedings.

Counsel brought to the notice of the court that the State Government had complied with the apex court's earlier order and deposited Rs. 50 crores with the High Court.
