Kalam, PM greet Musharraf, Jamali

By Our Diplomatic Correspondent

NEW DELHI AUG. 14. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, have greeted their Pakistani counterparts, Pervez Musharraf and Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, on the occasion of Pakistan's Independence Day.

``India is firmly committed to the improvement of relations with Pakistan and to establish a relationship of trust, friendship and cooperation, based on the Shimla Agreement and the Lahore Declaration,'' Mr. Kalam said in his message. The President said: ``the menace of terrorism poses a serious threat to our societies. It is incumbent upon us to unitedly fight the menace for its complete eradication''.

In his message to Mr. Jamali, Mr. Vajpayee hoped India and Pakistan would be able to ``put behind us the climate of mistrust and suspicion and move towards peaceful and fruitful cooperation, rejecting violence and confrontation.''
