Party sources indicated that Mr. Rao had been asked to be here latest by tomorrow for discussions. Several groups and leaders of the State have been advocating a change of leadership in the State as Mr. Rao is nearing the end of his tenure. The party leadership is seized of the issue in view of the fact that elections are due in October next year. While a section of the party is in favour of the CLP leader, Y. Rajasekhara Reddy, the high command is sensitive to the political developments in the State, including the demand for a separate Telengana state and the need to project a Scheduled Castes/Backward Class leader from among its ranks. Last fortnight witnessed hectic parleys among the Congress leaders of the State who have also interacted personally and in groups with the party leadership, including its president, Sonia Gandhi.
