Troops for Iraq: U.S. may seek U.N. resolution

WASHINGTON JULY 20. The United States is looking into the possibility of securing a United Nations resolution which will make it easier for India to send its troops to Iraq, the top civilian official in Iraq, L. Paul Bremer, said today.

The U.S. Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, is looking into the possibility of getting a U.N. resolution ``provided it can be done in a way that is useful and makes it easier for people such as the Indians and for other countries to provide troops'', he said on NBC-TV.

At present, there are 147,000 American troops in Iraq and about 14,000 British troops in addition to 13,000 troops from 19 countries. The U.S. was hoping for 17,000 Indian troops. — PTI
