By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE July 15. A City court has sentenced K.S. Ravishkumar and his brother, K.S. Prakash, to rigorous imprisonment for seven years in a dowry death case. A penalty of Rs. 55,000 has also been imposed on them.

As they have not returned the cash and jewellery taken as dowry, the convicts will have to undergo imprisonment for another year and pay a fine of Rs. 5,000.

Ravishkumar, along with Prakash, is alleged to have harassed his wife, Shobha, of Bairanahalli village in Nelamangala, in a bid to get Rs. 3 lakh more as dowry from her parents.

Unable to bear the constant physical and mental torture, Shobha committed suicide at her husband's place on October 10, 1999.

The couple got married on July 11, 1999. A dowry of Rs. 50,000 in cash, 60 sovereigns of gold jewellery, and a site worth about Rs. 3 lakh was given to Ravishkumar at the time of marriage. Following Shobha's death, her father lodged a complaint with the Nelamangala Police. The case was subsequently referred to the Corps of Detectives.

Killed in mishap: Jagdish Chowdhary (35), a mechanical engineer from Vishakapatnam, was killed when he rammed his motorcycle into a truck parked near the Begum Mahal Circle in Ulsoor Police Station limits on Tuesday morning.

He died on the spot. Chowdhary, police said, had come to the City to attend a seminar. A case has been registered.

A man, aged about 25, was found run over by a train at Deepanjalinagar in Bangalore City Railway Police limits. The victim has not been identified. The body was recovered on Tuesday morning.

The body of a woman, aged about 35, was found on the railway track at Channapatna. She has not been identified, according to police.
