Speculation rife over arrest of `drug traffickers'

By S. Vijay Kumar

MADURAI JULY 15. As the police are tight-lipped over the arrest of two women in Madurai who were in "possession" of a contraband substance and unaccounted money to the tune of Rs. 1.4 crores, it has given room to speculation. Renija (43) and Serija alias Janani (21) of Anbu Nagar here were picked up in a joint operation by the city and Madurai district police on July 10. A luxury car used by them was also seized. The women were produced before a magistrate shortly after midnight and remanded to judicial custody in the Tiruchi prison in the wee hours of Friday. Supervised by top police officials, the 24-hour operation was kept confidential and the authorities refused to divulge any information even after five days of apprehending the accused.

Even basic information such as nature of complaint, exact quantum of drugs and cash seized, network of the accused and source of narcotics is not clear. "This is a high level operation and we have no idea of what is happening. Custodial interrogation of the women alone will reveal their modus operandi," an official in the Intelligence Wing said. Interestingly, no follow-up action appears to have been initiated. "The women, while expressing shock over the recovery of drugs and cash from a room (of their rented premises in Madurai and Chennai), named a bigwig who used to frequent there.

A thorough interrogation will throw more light on those backing their activities," one of the officials involved in the operation said. Meanwhile, the luxury car in which the police claimed to have seized Rs. 10 lakhs and 5 kg of processed ganja, was produced in a Madurai court today.
