Dyke blown up to release water

Beijing: China on Sunday used explosives to blow up a dyke of Tangduo lake in east China's flood-hit Anhui province to release gushing flood waters which have displaced some 17,000 people. The explosion, designated by Anhui's flood control and drought relief headquarters, blew an outlet in the dyke of Tangduo lake of the Huaihe river in the afternoon to release floodwater. The explosion opened an outlet of 1,500 metres wide in the lower reaches of Tangduo lake for floodwater to be released into the fields outside the dyke. The floodwater submerged the road by the dyke and the trees along the road very quickly, Xinhua news agency reported. Before the blasting, all the 17,000 people had been evacuated from the areas that were expected to be affected by the released floodwater. — PTI
