dated July 07,1953: Animals and Music

London Zoo officials were carrying out experiments to find out what effect music produced on animals. In a series of observations carried out they arranged for an accordionist to go round playing his instrument, Chimpanzees enjoyed themselves, beating time to the music. One of them danced round on all fours in time with the rhythm. Lions which had been generally held to be indifferent to the strains of music, provided a surprise by marching up and down in their cages watching every move the musician made. Among the less musical, were the reptiles; they just slept through it all.
