Tribal women burnt to death

By Our Staff Correspondent

RANCHI July 3. Two tribal women were burnt to death in public by Mahuasosle and Auratand villagers in Godda district yesterday on charges that they practiced witchcraft.

The panchayat held these women, to be witches, and responsible for the protracted illness of a villager and set fire on them. The Godda Superintendent of Police, however, said the women were beaten to death first and then burnt. The two have been identified as Bahamai Soren and Nanka Hembrom. According to the SP, the husband of the Bahamai Soren, has filed an FIR against 11 persons, prime among them being Munshi Soren, who usually calls the shot, and 50 other persons of the villagers.

He said that action would be taken against all those named in the FIR.
