Blix to head panel on banned weapons

STOCKHOLM JULY 3. Former Chief U.N. Inspector, Hans Blix, will head a planned international commission on weapons of mass destruction, the Swedish Foreign Minister, Anna Lindh, said on Thursday. The commission, which hasn't been established yet, would likely be based in the Swedish capital, Stockholm. Mr. Blix, who retired June 30 from the U.N., was asked to lead the group, Ms. Lindh said. ``It is gratifying that Blix has accepted the presidency. He has unique experiences and knowledge,'' she said. ``We must do everything to counter the threats of weapons of mass destruction.'' The commission is expected to set up this fall and will issue its first recommendations sometime in 2005.
