Ex-U.P. Minister keeps sleuths waiting

LUCKNOW JUNE 13. The former Uttar Pradesh Minister, Amarmani Tripathi, asked to appear before Crime Branch investigating officers in connection with murder of the poetess, Madhumita Shukla, did not turn up today, keeping the sleuths waiting for the whole day.

The Crime Branch-CID will now issue another summon and has asked local police to ensure Mr. Tripathi's presence before investigating officers on June 16. The sleuths have quizzed almost all the people who knew Madhumita and only Mr. Tripathi is to be questioned now, a senior CB-CID officer said.

The CB-CID has to submit its reports within four days as per the timeframe set by the Chief Minister, Mayawati, who had asked the investigating agency to complete the probe within a month.

``Our report will be ready once Mr. Tripathi records his statement,'' the official said.

However, he refused to say anything when asked whether Mr. Tripathi's DNA sample would be sent to Hyderabad to verify it it matches with that of Madhumita's foetus. The case was handed over to the CB-CID on May 19 after Mr. Tripathi's alleged relationship with the poetess came to light. Madhumita was shot dead by two assailants at her residence on May 9.

Meanwhile, Mr. Tripathi told the UNI today that he was prepared to cooperate with the CID in its investigation in the case. ``I am eager to find out the truth behind the killing of the poetess. Like any common man, I am ready to help the CID in its investigation into the crime,'' Mr. Tripathi said. — PTI, UNI
