Karan does well in Frankfurt

NEW DELHI JUNE 13. Karan Rastogi defeated Andreas Weber of Germany 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the group `I' ITF junior tennis tournament in Frankfurt.

Recovering from ill health that had hampered his progress during the French Open, Karan won a string of good matches. Once he won his first round in three sets after losing the first set, at 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 against Jochen Schottler of Germany, Karan has been in good form.

In the draw of 64, Karan beat Antal Van Der Duim of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-3 and Roman Herold of Germany 6-4, 6-2 in the second and third rounds respectively.

In doubles, Karan and Somdev Dev Varman made the semifinals, beating Juan Pablo Amado and Horacio Zeballos of Argentina 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. The second-seeded Indian pair, which enjoyed a bye in the first round, had beaten Roman Herold and Philipp Piyamangkol of Germany 7-5, 6-2 in the second round.

Somdev, however, lost in the pre-quarterfinals of the singles to Woong-Sun Jun of Korea 1-6, 6-7 (2-7). He had earlier beaten Philipp Piyamangkol of Germany 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) in the first round and went on to beat Lachlan Ferguson of Australia 0-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 in the second round.

The Indian girls did well to make the doubles final, but had it tough in singles. Sania Mirza and Sanaa Bhambri beat Daniella Dominikovic and Jessica Engels of Australia 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals. The Indian pair that had made the French Open semifinals, beat Klaudyna Kasztelaniee and Natalia Kolat of Poland 6-1, 7-5 in the quarterfinals after getting a walkover from Gayatri Krishnan and Bhavani Trimurthi in the second round.

Sania and Sanaa had a bye in the first round, and will play Maren Kassens of Germany and Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia in the final. The German-Russian combination had beaten Tara Iyer and her Australian partner Lara Giltinan in the quarterfinals.

Tara and Lara had beaten Camelia Todorova of the US and Masa Zec-Peskiric of Slovenia 6-3, 6-2 in the second round after a bye in the first.

In singles, Sania Mirza lost 6-1, 4-6, 2-6 to Masa Zec-Peskiric of Slovenia in the second round after beating Veera Nurmi of Finland 6-0, 6-2 in the first.

Sanaa Bhambri went down 2-6, 6-7 (2-7) to Antonia Fohse of Germany in the first round. Bhavani Trimurthi lost to Tamara unic of Crotia 2-6, 4-6 and Tara Iyer lost to Sarah Raab of GErmany 6-7 (4-7), 3-6 in other first round matches.
