UAE extends amnesty to illegal expatriates

Dubai June 4. The United Arab Emirates has ``informally'' extended an amnesty for illegal expatriates to leave the country without punishment till the end of this month, a media report said today.

The decision followed a request by the embassies of the expatriates, Gulf News quoted official sources as saying.

Foreigners make up 85 per cent of the population of 3.1 millions. Most of them are Indians, Bangladeshis, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans, Filipinos and Iranians. Around 4,00,000 are staying in the country illegally.

The scheme began on January 1 to encourage infiltrators and other visa violators to leave without punishment.
