By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI June 4. Rangaswamy Parthasarathy, former News Editor of The Hindu, died in Chennai today after a brief illness. Family sources said he had been suffering from a heart ailment for about 10 days. He was 88 and is survived by his wife, son and two daughters.

After completing his studies from the Madras Christian College, Mr. Parthasarathy joined the city-based English eveninger, The Mail, before moving on to The Hindu in 1944. He served the newspaper for over three decades. He was the author of a column on theatre and fine arts in the newspaper's sister publication `Sport and Pastime'.

After his retirement, Mr. Parthasarathy, popularly known as `Mail' Parthasarathy or `M.P.,' took on the task of chronicling the 100-year history of The Hindu, published during the paper's centenary celebrations in 1977-78.

Later, he served in the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's college of journalism. He also wrote a few books on journalism, besides a collection of religious publications.
