Commissioned into the famous Maratha Light Infantry Regiment in 1965, Gen. Nagaraj has had a very distinguished career. An alumnus of National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla, Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and National Defence College, the General has held various command, staff and instructional appointments during his career. He has the unique distinction of participating in all major operations including conflicts with Pakistan in 1965 and 1971, Operations Pawan, Bajrang, Rhino, Rakshak, Vijay and Parakram. He commanded 8 Maratha Light Infantry, an infantry brigade in Punjab and a division in counter-insurgency role in Jammu and Kashmir. Awarded "Uttam Yudh Seva Medal'' for his distinguished role during Operation Vijay, he was in command of the famous Vajra Corps in Western Sector before taking over as Director-General of Infantry.
