Actress' mother gets bail in extortion case

Mumbai May 29. Sunanda Shetty and Bhupinder Singh Sachdev, mother and secretary of the film actress, Shilpa Shetty, were today granted anticipatory bail till June 12 by a sessions court here in a case of alleged extortion registered in Surat, Gujarat.

The Sessions Judge, Hemant Deshpande, granted them transit bail. They were directed to seek regular bail in a Surat court on or before June 12. Mr. Bhupinder Singh appeared in person. Ms. Sunanda is in a hospital in Dubai.

The same court had on May 16 granted transit bail to Ms. Shetty's father, Surendra Shetty, and asked him to obtain a regular bail from a Surat court on or before May 28. He has sought bail in a Surat court and the matter is pending.

Ms. Shetty's parents have been accused of hiring a gang to recover Rs. 80 lakhs from a saree manufacturer, Pankaj Agarwal. The money was said to be Ms. Shetty's unpaid modelling fee for appearing in an advertisement film.

Meanwhile, Ms. Shetty today charged the media with ``convicting us before the court verdict'' and said they came from a decent background and would not ``stoop so low''.

``The media has proclaimed the victim and villain, based on evidence which has not yet been substantiated.'' — PTI
