`If trishul programme crosses limits law will take its course'

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI MAY 27. Swami Chinmayanand, the BJP MP for Jaunpur, who took over today as Minister for State for Home Affairs, said the office offered him the opportunity to work with the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, and meet the challenges to internal security and fight the proxy war.

The 56 year-old Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader, according to profile issued by his office in the Home Ministry, has qualities like Chanakya and Chandragupta which have made him a "good orator, administrator and Parliamentarian.''

He is also described as a "saintly kind of person'', who has given up "dependence on the material world.'' Speaking to the media after formally assuming office Swami Chinmayanand said "the VHP is a social and cultural organisation towards which my responsibility will remain as before. But maintaining the decorum of my Ministry will be paramount.''

Asked about the VHP's `trishul' (trident) distribution drive, he said that as long as their use remained "within the religious limits it is all right.'' "But once it crosses the limit, we shall do what the constitution says.''

Taking a swipe at the Rashtriya Janata Dal, he said that while trishuls were part of a religion and swords were associated with a particular caste, lathis did not enjoy any such status.
