Ijaz was killed at around 2300 hrs IST in the Thai capital after unidentified killers sprayed bullets on him from close range while he was on his way for dinner in a hotel.
Formerly associated with the Karachi-based Dawood Ibrahim and the South East Asia-based Chhota Rajan, Ijaz was wanted by the Mumbai Police in as many as six cases.
``He was wanted by us in two cases of murder and four cases of extortion,'' the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Satya Pal Singh, said.
The two cases of murders were registered in Pydhonie and Jogeshwari.
Lakdawala's men had also made an abortive attempt on the life of filmmaker, Lawrence D'Souza, last year.
Recently, Lakdawala had threatened a producer and demanded ransom from him, Dr. Singh said, but refused to divulge the identity of the film personality.
Police said he was also wanted for his role in the December 1992 -January 1993 riots that broke out after the demolition of the Babri Masjid.
Police suspect Lakdawala's hand behind the killing of betting king Sharad Shetty in Dubai.
He is also believed to be behind the murder of the 1993 bomb blast accused, Hanif Khadawala.
In the last few years, extortion activities have increased in Mumbai as it fetched easy money for gangsters. In order to curb them, the State Government enacted the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, a stringent law. UNI, PTI
