Devadula-I by mid-2004, says CM

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD March 11. The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, directed irrigation officials today to complete the first phase of the Devadula lift irrigation project across the Godavari in 15 months' time from now.

He wanted the land acquisition programme started from today and tenders called immediately to facilitate early commencement of work. Forest land acquired for the project would be suitably compensated by equivalent area of land elsewhere, he added.

Mr. Naidu was reviewing the progress of the Godavari Lift Irrigation Scheme at Devadula on the basis of a project report submitted by the Water and Power Consultancy Services (WAPCOS), a Government of India undertaking. He asked the agency to submit a comprehensive report in four days.

WAPCOS has carried out field investigations and surveys, reviewed the outline scheme and suggested optimal configuration for the project. It will now plan and carry out engineering surveys besides conducting basic studies on hydrology, soils, agronomy, irrigation planning and designs.

The Chief Minister said he would direct the APTRANSCO to give clearance for supply of power to the project and the R & B to expedite road-laying works between Eturunagaram and Tupakulagudem villages.

The Major Irrigation Minister, K. Srihari, the Principal Secretary, Irrigation, Harinarayana, and other senior officials were present at the meeting.
