Fishermen released

By V.S. Sambandan

MANNAR MARCH 5. A Sri Lankan district court today ordered the release of 96 Indian fishermen who had encroached into the island's territorial waters, while placing 21 vessel masters under custody and seizing their trawlers.

The fishermen, all from Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu, were taken into custody since Monday night in two batches. The released fishermen include 12 of the 17 who were admitted in the General Hospital here following clashes with Sri Lankan fishermen on Monday.

A total of 117 Indian fishermen have been taken into custody in two separate incidents on Monday and Tuesday. The remaining 21 vessel masters and their trawlers have been detained for further legal proceedings, officials here told The Hindu.

The released fishermen were handed over to the Sri Lankan civil authorities tonight.
