The incident took place when over a dozen students, led by David Boon, Ravi Tushir and Ajit Singh Lathar, broke into the room of the mess secretary, Bharat Rohin. Mr. Rohin's brother, Vikrant, and the hostel president, Mrityunjay, were also present in the room. Armed with sticks, the assailants locked the door from inside and started beating up the three saying that the hostel had turned into a "harijan'' stronghold after Mrityunjay was elected its president. Mrityunjay sustained injuries in the leg, while Rohin's face and back were badly bruised. Vikrant, who tried to intervene, suffered a fracture, students said. The three alleged that they were threatened with dire consequences if they complained to police about the incident. However, a few senior students came to know of the attack and insisted on reporting the matter to police. But at the Maurice Nagar police station, police refused to register an FIR. The victims were told that a formal complaint would have to be made by the hostel warden.Thereafter, the students approached the SC/ST Commission. They also met the Delhi Police Commissioner, Radhey Shyam Gupta, who directed the area Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sanjay Baniwal, to take immediate action. A case under Sections 341, 323 and 506 of the IPC and Section 3 of the SC/ST Act was registered after medical examination of the victims tonight. However, those named in the complaint are yet to be arrested.
