Tibetan students protest Chinese envoy's visit

Chandigarh Oct. 3. Tibetan students today stormed the venue of a function to be attended by the Chinese Ambassador, Hua Jundua, and vandalised the auditorium shouting anti-China slogans, police said.

Nearly 50 students, including girls, entered the venue shortly before the arrival of the envoy and smashed window panes, uprooted mikes and threw chairs around. Police chased away the protesters who shouted slogans ``we want freedom. Dalai Lama zindabad''.

Senior police officers, including the IGP, B.S. Bassi, also arrived at the scene.

The arrival of the Ambassador, who was to inaugurate a photo exhibition, was delayed by half-an-hour.

The exhibition was held to celebrate the 53rd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Referring to the incident, Mr. Hua said, ``we have ears for their demand. If it is just, we will listen and respond.''

``We expect such activity everywhere. I found this in the U.S., Fiji and Canada,'' he said. — PTI
