A journal from ex-policemen

KOZHIKODE Oct. 3. A few retired policemen, who once wielded lathi to enforce law and order, have decided to carry a stronger weapon--the pen. Perhaps, they must have realised that the pen can do more things than the lathi.

The Kerala Police Pensioners' Welfare Association had recently launched a magazine, `Mithra Vedi', aimed at propagating peace through police and public awareness. There are no protocols as far as the columns of this well-designed monthly are concerned. Right from the DGP to the Constable and their family, any members can express their ideas through its columns. Not only pensioners and their family members, the serving policemen and others, including officials, social and cultural figures, also can contribute to the magazine.

Published from Kottayam, the journal is priced at Rs.10. Its patrons include the retired Supreme Court Judge, K.T. Thomas, the writer, S. Guptan Nair, the retired Government Secretary, T.N. Jayachandran and the former Director Generals of Police, M.K. Joseph and T.V. Madhusoodanan. The former Superintendent of Police, K. Nirmal Kumar, is the Chief Editor, and a 12-member editorial board assists him.

The magazine has urged all serving police personnel to forward their detailed bio-data and a photograph well before their retirement to PB No. 702, Kottatyam-1.

Apart form creative writings, the magazine has invited suggestions from the public for improving its quality and scope. Aimed at achieving its goal of a "better police-public relationship'' and in tune with the Chief Ministers' vision of a "feel-free policing", the magazine has urged the people to write about changes that required in the police set-up and measures that could improve the police-public relationship.

Thanks to the initiative of the Director General of Police, K.J. Joseph, retired policemen will soon be getting identity cards. Announced by the DGP at the association's State conference in July last, the notification in this regard was issued in July-end. The second issue of the `Mithra Vedi', which came out last month, carried a format for applying for the identity card.
