NEW DELHI SEPT. 17. The much-awaited Metro train made its maiden trial run from Shastri Park this morning, taking Delhiites a step closer to their long-cherished dream of having a hassle-free transport system. The gleaming silver-coloured train was flagged off by the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, in the presence of a host of VVIPs, including the Union Urban Development Minister, Ananth Kumar; the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit; and the Delhi Lieutenant-Governor, Vijai Kapoor.

Describing the day as a proud one for Delhiites, Ms. Dikshit said the Metro would not only change the whole transport scenario, but also usher in a new work culture. While the Shahdara-Tis Hazari corridor would be used by over 1 lakh people every day, over 23 lakh people would benefit when phase one of the project was completed, she added. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation managing director, E. Sreedharan, while noting that the first trial run was taking place on the auspicious ``Vishwakarma Diwas'', acknowledged the role of the Japanese-Korean consortium, which had been given the contract for supplying 60 trains (240 coaches), in advancing the delivery of the first train by four months for facilitating early trials.
