Maps on national literacy levels on the Internet

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI SEPT. 7. Interactive maps of India detailing national literacy levels or population distribution or sex ratios are now just a mouse click away.

All you have to do is go to the website hosted by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner (www.censusindia.com) , and inaugurated by the Deputy Prime Minister L. K. Advani, on Thursday, and click on `maps'. This will give you the latest census data in a user-friendly spatial format.

Using Geographic Information Systems technology, the maps allow a user to look at the country as a whole as well as the State and district.

For instance, if you want to know which districts in Rajasthan are more prone to female infanticide than others, all you have to do is click on the area on the map, which is Rajasthan and select the sex ratio.

The site also accepts queries, although these are restricted to data collected as part of the census exercise.
