Left-arm spinners Bablu Kumar (six for 50) and Sonu Sharma (four for 27) engineered a sensational KSCA first innings collapse at A.C. Tech, with the side being bundled out for 111 in just 47.2 of the allotted 90 overs.
Following on, 217 runs behind, and with just 45 overs in hand, KSCA facing a hopeless situation, finished at 128 for three in its second essay.
In fact, with spinners Bablu and Sonu sending down their overs rapidly, Indian Airlines consumed just 96 minutes to complete the 45 second innings overs. Manoj Malhotra (34), Shyam Ponappa (40) and Stuart Binny (15-ball 34) made the KSCA second innings appear a touch better, yet it was too little, too late in the day.
Chasing 271 for the lead against ONGC at ICL-Guru Nanak, MAC- TNCA XI was in a spot of bother at 148 for five, when the left- handed sixth wicket pair of S. Sharath (75, 145b, 10x4) and R. Ramkumar (49, 83b, 4x4, 1x6) put together 102 in 27.2 overs. The home team ended the day at 295 for nine off 90 overs.
Earlier, another southpaw, opener Sadagopan Ramesh had made 65 (134b, 9x4). In the ONGC attack, the spin duo of offie Sarandeep Singh (three for 68) and left-armer Sunil Joshi (four for 61) made their presence felt, and the last day could serve an interesting finish.
At SPIC-YMCA, the 86-run seventh wicket partnership between the left-handed R. Prasanna (56 not out, 98b, 3x4) and the combative wicket-keeper batsman T.R. Arasu (52, 80b, 4x4) enabled TNCA president's XI overhaul Mumbai Cricket Association's (MCA) 215 and eventually get a sizable 81-run lead. There was a valuable hand too from southpaw C. Hemant Kumar (61, 170b, 5x4), while S. Badrinath, following his six-wicket haul, chipped in with 34. For MCA, off-spinner Harshad Rawale and leggie Vineet Sarang scalped four and three respectively.
Combined Districts gained a 30-run lead over Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) at SRMC, however, an invaluable 72-run eighth-wicket stand between all-rounder Laxmi Ratan Shukla (40) and senior cricketer Utpal Chatterjee (48) provided CAB a life-line, after it was tottering at 130 for seven. Rohan Gavaskar's 31 was the next highest contribution. For the Districts, leg-spinner B. Karthikeyan claimed four for 57.
