One held, Ephedrine seized

CHENNAI Aug. 20. In a major breakthrough, the Flower Bazaar district police today seized 140 kilos of Ephedrine, a controlled drug and a raw material used for manufacturing heroin.

A pharmaceutical company owner Nandakumar of MMDA colony was arrested. Giving details about the seizure, the DCP (Flower Bazaar), Mahesh Kumar Agarwal, said acting on a specific information a special team was formed to investigate the case.

During the past two months police kept a secret watch over Nandakumar and closely monitored his movements. This morning he was trapped when he brought four kilos of Ephedrine to Devaraj Mudali Street to hand it over to a decoy.

Based on the information provided by him police raided a flat in MMDA colony and seized 140 kilos of Ephedrine. It was a controlled drug and also used in the manufacture of cough syrup. It was banned in several countries.

Mr. Mahesh Agarwal said police were further investigating the source and destination of the seized consignment.
