Speaking at the 10th Annual Convocation of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) here, Mr. Murthy urged Indian law schools and universities to have more and more academic exchanges with international universities. With the GATT norms coming into force from 2005, the Indian service sector would be opened for foreign investment. Hence global business practices should be implemented, he added. The NLSIU conferred the degree of "Doctor of Law, honoris causa" on C.G. Veeramanthri, former Justice of the International Court of Justice and former Justice of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, in recognition of his contribution to International Law and Justice. Meritorious law graduates were honoured with awards. The toppers included Tanushree A. Prasanna (Indira Ketan Medal for first rank), Pooja Sondhi (second rank), and Ramya S. (third rank). Medals were presented to Prashant S. Kumar for Administrative Law, Shristhi Jha (International Law), Poornima Sampath (Environmental Law), Vivek Jha (Best Student Advocate), and Shantanu Mukherjee (Intellectual Property). Degrees such as Masters of Law, Masters of Business Law, Bachelors of Arts and Law, Postgraduate Diploma in Human Rights Law, Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics, and Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Law were presented to students. B.N. Kirpal, Chief Justice of India, N.K. Jain, Chief Justice, Karnataka High Court, D.B.Chandre Gowda, Law Minister, N. Jayaram, Advocate-General, and D.V. Subba Rao, Chairman, Bar Council of India, were present.
