A second time

Sir, — The decision of the leaders of 21 political parties to reject the Election Commission's directive is tantamount to the negation of democratic principles. We citizens have every right to know about the candidate's background, assets and liabilities, educational qualifications etc. This is a case of rare unanimity among the leaders of diverse political parties, which they had shown earlier in Parliament while a bill was passed to hike the pay scales of MPs. Their decision to come out with a comprehensive legislation to address the issue of criminalisation of politics is merely an eyewash.

Dinu Jose,
Thiruvananthapuram
