Akademi drama awards announced

KOZHIKODE MAY 7. `Agniyum Varshavum', staged by Samskara Nambrathukara, won the first prize in presentation in the Amateur Drama Competitions organised by the Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi at the Perambra Community Hall in Kozhikode from May 4 to 6.

`Uyerthudi' staged by Sreestha Gramina Kala Samiti Kannur bagged the second prize in this category.

The jury chairman, A.K. Nambiar, and the members, Prem Prasad, S. Radhakrishnan, S.K.R. Pillai, and member secretary, Jose George, announced the results of the competitions at a press conference here today.

The first and second prizes consist of Rs. 15,000 and Rs 10,000 in cash respectively besides a citation and a memento.

Suveeran, director of `Agniyum Varsham' was adjudged the best director and Pramod Payannur, director of `Uyerthudi', was selected for the award for the second best director. The best director award included Rs. 10,000 as cash prize and Rs. 5,000 for the second prize. They will also be given a citation and a memento.

Manikantan won the best actor award for his performance in `Uyerthudi' and Mini Radhan won the best actress award for her performance in `Agniyum Varshavum'. The prize consists of Rs. 5,000 in cash and a citation and memento.

Babu Annur and P.K. Varsha bagged the second best actor and actress awards for their performances in `Agniyum Varshavum' and `Poovanpazham'. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 3000 each.

A special jury award was given to the play `Bhagavathajukkam' staged by the Abinaya Nataka Padana Kendram, Thiruvananthapuram. The award consists of Rs 7,500 in cash and a citation.

The prizes would be distributed at a function to be held in Kasaragod after the rainy season, they said.
