Addressing mediapersons here today, Mr. Kalainathan said cases of burglary, house breaking and anti-social elements moving about with lethal weapons were on the rise. Mere increase in police strength would not be sufficient. There should be night patrolling and also proper vigil to ensure safety and security of the people.
While welcoming promotions given to police officers, he said the police personnel should be provided with needed facilities. Flying squads should be re-introduced. Constables should be posted in adequate number, he said.
Expressing despair over the failure of the State Election Commission in taking political parties into confidence, Mr. Kalainathan said appointments of Returning officers and Assistant Returning Officers had not been intimated to parties.
Demanding an all-party meeting, he said "we do not know the updated list of voters and what is the present approach of the Government regarding civic polls". The poor budgetary allocation for civic polls showed that the Government was not interested in the revival of democracy at the grassroots.
Mr. Kalainathan said the claims of the PCC leader, V. Narayanasamy, that the CPI had participated in the rally held in Karaikal recently were baseless and untrue. "We are not associating ourselves with the Congress-led front".
Stating that the Congress was adopting an opportunist policy, he recalled how the Congress had associated itself with the AIADMK and then the PMC. There appeared to be an attempt now on Congress to hobnob with the DMK.
The public distribution system had totally failed in Pondicherry. People were not getting essential commodities, he alleged.
