Paes leads India to victory

By Our CorrespondentUNI

Wellington April 7. Leander Paes today took India to victory in the second-round Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone tie, defeating New Zealand No. 1, Mark Nielsen, in a hard-fought five-setter 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 2-6, 6-1 at the Renouf Tennis Centre here. With this win, Paes gave India an unassailable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five encounter.

Earlier in the day, India took a vital lead after Paes, partnered by Mahesh Bhupathi, beat the inexperienced Kiwi pair of James Shortall and Daniel Williams 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in a rain-affected doubles match.
