Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Israel's goal

Sir, — In response to the Editorial `India's stake in Palestine cause' (April 5), I would like to bring to your notice the following. First, Israeli forces refrain from causing any damage whatsoever to the churches and Christian holy sites in Bethlehem, even if they are fired upon from these sites. Second, Palestinians, who are for the most part Muslim, are cynically exploiting churches, as well as universities and hospitals connected with churches, as hiding places and fire positions. This type of behaviour constitutes a desecration of the holy sites. Third, the document in Arabic that proves Yasser Arafat's involvement in supporting terrorist and suicide activities is authentic and can be provided by us.

Most important, I would like to protest the Editorial's suggestion that Israel is not a democratic state. Israel is known for its democratic values and for its freedom of speech. Israeli Arabs, for instance, have proportional representation in our parliament, the Knesset. Israel's goal is peace and that the ceasefire, when established, will create the proper conditions for a renewal of the Israel- Palestinian negotiating process.

Yaron Mayer,
Israeli Embassy, New Delhi
