New norms for `uneconomic' schools

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM March 25. The UDF convener, Oommen Chandy, said here today that the UDF high power committee had recommended a major change in the existing norms relating to the closure of `uneconomic' schools. The existing norms provide for closing down primary schools that have less than 100 students. This would be amended to provide for closing down schools with less than 50 students.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Chandy said the UDF's policy was not to close down `uneconomic' schools indiscriminately, but to give one more chance to these schools to come out of the red by improving their standards. He said the UDF wanted to reduce the number of schools that would be classified as `uneconomic' and closed down. As per the earlier norms, all schools that have less than 100 students would be closed.

``The message we want to convey is that those schools which fail to improve their performance would be closed down. We would also take into account the problems related to schools in tribal and rural areas,'' he said. The Government had received a large number of memoranda urging for a chance to improve standards
