India's largest district bifurcated

TAMLUK (WEST BENGAL), JAN 1. The largest district in the country - Midnapore - in West Bengal was today formally bifurcated to facilitate smooth administration.

The new districts, Midnapore East and Midnapore West, will have four divisions each. The total number of districts in the State now stood at 19.

Inaugurating the Midnapore East district by unveiling a plaque at the Rakhal Chandra Memorial Maidan here, the Chief Minister, Mr. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said some parties wanted the district to be trifurcated and some others wanted four divisions.

While this could have benefitted people, paucity of funds did not permit this, the Chief Minister said. The Midnapore East district will include Tamluk, Kontai, Egra and Haldia sub-divisions while the Midnapore West will have Kharagpur, Midnapore, Jhargram and Ghatal subdivisions.
