Ban on smoking
Sir, - The Supreme Court order banning smoking in all public
places with immediate effect, will create a healthy atmosphere.
Unlike New Delhi, where the promulgation had little effect during
the past five years, it is hoped that the court order will be
strictly enforced with heavy spot fines for violation.
Surprisingly, some advocates were seen on the television smoking
freely in the Supreme Court lobby. The court order should also
incorporate a ban on all forms of cigarette advertisements.
Thanks to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, the ban on the sale
of cigarettes and smoking at Tirumala has been 100 per cent
effective for the past four decades. This is worthy of emulation
in other pilgrim centres like Manthralaya, Guruvayur etc.
Arcot Easwaran,
Chennai
