Widespread rain in State

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 23. The current spell of widespread rain in the State is likely to last for two or three days, raising expectations of a normal South-West Monsoon precipitation, according to the Met authorities here.

The Met Director, Mr. V. K. Gangadharan, said the South West monsoon had revived on September 19 in association with the development of a low pressure area off Goa.

Rainfall had been widespread in the southern districts of the State today and it was likely to move further north in the next two or three days, he said. With the current spell of rain, the negative rainfall was likely to be made up by two or three per cent.

Alappuzha received 8 cm of rain today, while Thodupuzha received 7 cm, Nedumangad and Kochi 6 cm each, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi Airport and Varkala 5 cm each and Kollam, Kottayam and Minicoy islands 3 cm each.

Rainfall had been poor this month so far and the overall deficit for the season was deficient by 19 per cent as on September 19. Rainfall had been deficient in all the districts except Idukki, Ernakulam and Kasaragod.

The State capital had been experiencing high temperatures similar to those in summer since the beginning of this month, with the mercury hovering around 35 degrees celsius.

Kerala receives a normal rainfall of 252 mm in September, which is about 11 per cent of the total Southwest Monsoon precipitation. The best September rainfall of 518 mm was recorded in 1998, while the worst September rain of 49 mm was recorded in 1991.
