SP urges Cong., BSP MLAs to resign

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 13. The Samajwadi Party intends to continue with its efforts to force the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr. Rajnath Singh, to call for elections soon after the expiry of the State Assembly's term on October 17. According to the SP general secretary, Mr. Amar Singh, the party will stage `dharnas' before the residences of MLAs belonging to the BJP and other political parties to press for their resignation as well.

``I would appeal to all the other MLAs to follow our example and quit, failing which we shall picket their residences to ensure that the BJP Government is not allowed to function once its term expires,'' said Mr. Amar Singh. Keen to appear as the main principal political force fighting the BJP in the State, Mr. Singh appealed to the Congress and even the BSP to get its MLAs to quit their membership. ``There is no point in strengthening Mr. Rajnath Singh. Everybody must quit,'' said Mr. Amar Singh. The SP general secretary expended considerable energy targeting the UP Chief Minister, Mr. Rajnath Singh, and accused his Government of all round failure. He said the BJP only paid lip service to morals. ``We are following the glorious socialist tradition of not drawing even a day's salary after the expiry of the term,'' said Mr. Singh.

He also sought to question the Chief Minister's motives to introduce the new reservation policy for the more backward castes, and the possibility of the Government getting the measure implemented through an ordinance. ``What was this Government doing for the last five years. This is nothing but an election eve-stunt,'' claimed Mr. Amar Singh. The SP leader charged the BJP Government with misleading the people by getting one of its Ministers oppose the measure in court. Striking a combative posture, Mr. Amar Singh said that irrespective of the desperate attempts being made by the Rajnath Singh Government, the BJP was heading for a rout in the U.P. elections.

More MLAs quit

LUCKNOW, SEPT.13. All five members of the Left parties resigned from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly today. They are Mr. Ram Kripal, Mr. Ram Swarup Singh, Mr. Ram Yagh and Mr. Vinod Mani (all CPI-M) and Mr. Rajendra Yadav (CPI). Three more Samajwadi MLAs, Messrs. Yogendra Singh, Ahmad and Abdul Kalam also quit the Assembly.
