HC directive on private engg. colleges' plea

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JULY 18. The Madras High Court has directed the State Government to include 23 more private engineering colleges, which are awaiting university affiliation despite having already obtained AICTE approval, in the single window system of admissions this year.

Granting an interim direction on a batch of petitions filed by engineering colleges, Mr. Justice F. M. Ibrahim Kalifulla, however, asked the petitioner-institutions to give an undertaking to the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) that affiliation certificates would be furnished, as and when obtained from the universities concerned.

In his order, the judge said the AICTE communication specifically stipulated that admissions for these colleges be made through central counselling arranged by the State Government and the approval was valid only for the academic year 2001-02.

Under these circumstances, if admissions were not done through the SWS, the approval granted by the AICTE would become useless for this academic year, as they could not admit students of their choice, the order read.

Some of these institutions, which were in the identical situation last year, became non-operational and had to seek revalidation once again. If the institutions are not included in the list of colleges displayed for admission through the SWS, it will cause irreparable injury and hardship, the petitioners contended.

The names of colleges directed to be included in the Single Window System for the academic year 2001-02 are:
