New traffic rule from July 1

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, JUNE 28. All vehicles coming from Karuvadikuppam and beyond will be diverted on Ezhai Mariamman Koil Street in Muthialpet to proceed to Pondicherry and will not be permitted to go straight to the clock tower junction as a one-way system is being implemented on an experimental basis from July 1.

Mr. M. Ramalingam, Superintendent of Police (Traffic), today said vehicles bound for Karuvadikuppam from the clock tower junction at Muthialpet alone would be allowed to take diversion. This arrangement was aimed at easing peak-hour congestion and would be made permanent if it was found convenient.

He said vehicles coming from Lawspet and proceeding to Pondicherry on the Pakkamodayanpet road could go straight and take a left turn at Kamaraj salai. Vehicles going to Gorimedu or proceeding to Ellapillaichavady would be permitted to take a turn at the fountain near the Pakkamodayanpet junction to pass through the East Coast Road. Similarly, vehicles going to Lawspet from Pondicherry would have to go straight and take a turn at the Rajiv Gandhi square.

Mr.Ramalingam said arrangements were made for plying of buses on Marai Malai Adigal Salai without any difficulty on the southern side.

When his attention was drawn to the reckless speed of vehicles, particularly the two-wheelers, on the beach road, he said a proper checking was being conducted and this drive would be intensified.
