Rs. 68 lakhs for continuing education activities

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 28. The district panchayat has decided to set aside Rs. 68 lakhs for continuing education activities in the district.

Ms. Sasikala Sivasankar, district panchayat president, said this while inaugurating the monthly review meeting of the State Literacy Mission here on Thursday.

A sum of Rs.25 lakhs has been set aside for the construction of a head office and permanent training centre for the district literacy mission. In order to provide computer training to the educated unemployed from economically backward classes, the district office will invest Rs. 10 lakhs for purchasing five computers and the necessary accessories.

A Rs. 10-lakh project will be launched to open 300 literacy centres in tribal and slum areas.

The Kanjiramkulam grama panchayat, where there was a severe shortage of drinking water, will be adopted and Rs. 10 lakhs spent on organising water conservation programmes with the help of continuing literacy activists. A sum of Rs. 10 lakhs will be set aside for launching vocational training programmes to equip women for self-employment.

The project director, State Literacy Mission, Prof. K. Sridharan, presided. The director, Literacy Mission, Dr. M. G. Sasibhooshan was also present.
