Sivakasi student tops MBBS list

CHENNAI, JUNE 28. A student from Sivakasi, A.C. Arun (SHNV HS
Secondary School), is the first rank holder among contestants for
MBBS/BDS courses in the State for 2001-2002, whose merit list was
released last evening by the Selection Committee under the
Directorate of Medical Education.
He has secured 299.50 marks out of a maximum of 300 marks. Of the
11,850 eligible applicants, S. Sudha of Cuddalore (St. Mary's
Matriculation School) has been ranked second with a total of
299.32 marks and N. Dhivya of St John's Matriculation School,
Villivakkam, Chennai, is the third rank holder with 298.90 marks.
Interestingly, all the three belonged to the BC category.
A selection committee release said Phase I of counselling would
be held on July 4, 5 and 6. The candidates would be called for
counselling in the order of merit and allotted seats following
the rules of reservation. The intimation letters were being sent
to the candidates. Of the 12,157 applications received, 41.55 per
cent were male candidates and 58.45 per cent female candidates;
10.06 per cent candidates were from rural schools and the rest
from urban schools.
About 800 candidates would be called for counselling everyday in
four sessions of 200 candidates each, from 8 a.m. Candidates
should come an hour earlier, with all the original certificates.
They should also bring the prescribed DD drawn in favour of the
Secretary, Selection Committee, Chennai:
For Government medical/dental colleges, the DD should be for Rs.
2,000 (Rs. 1,000 for SC/ST candidates); for self- financing
medical and dental colleges, they should bring a DD for Rs. 5,000
(Rs. 2,500 for SC/ST candidates).
The allotment would be made for 10 government medical colleges,
IRT Perundurai Medical College, and two self-financing colleges
for MBBS course. For BDS, it would be for one government and
self-financing colleges.
The seat availability for MBBS was: 926 in government colleges,
40 in IRT Perundurai medical college and 170 in self- financing
colleges. In BDS, 50 seats were available in the government
dental college; in self-financing colleges 215 seats were
available under free seat category and 158 under payment
category.
In all, 25 per cent seats would go to rural candidates. The
allotment for 71 seats under special categories would be made
after the first phase of counselling. Candidates who had applied
for retotalling/revaluation could attend counselling with their
new marks as per the counselling schedule.
The merit list has been displayed at the Selection Committee
office and would be available on the Internet from noon on
Thursday at www.tnmediselection.com, www.southindia.com and
www.tnagar.com
The counselling schedule is as follows:
July 4: Rank I to 800 (marks upto 291.10)
July 5: Rank 801 to 1500 (marks from 291.10 to 287.36)
July 6: Upto rank 1700 besides 197 SC candidates, 49 ST
candidates and candidates from rural schools.
