Vijayaraje cremated

GWALIOR, JAN. 27. Veteran BJP leader Vijayaraje Scindia's mortal remains were consigned to flames here shortly after 5 p.m. by her son, senior Congress leader, Mr. Madhavrao Scindia.

The Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, and the Union Home Minister, Mr. L.K. Advani, along with their ministerial colleagues, Ms. Sushma Swaraj, Ms. Uma Bharti, Mr. Arun Jaitley, Mr. Satyanarain Jatia, Mr. Ramesh Bais, Ms. Sumitra Mahajan, and Mr. I.D. Swami, attended the funeral.

Vijayaraje was cremated with full State honour at the exclusive cremation ground of the erstwhile royal family of Gwalior. Her last journey began at about 1.30 p.m. this afternoon. The body, wrapped in the Tricolour, was carried in a palanquin by men from the armed forces. Mr. Scindia walked the entire one km route barefoot carrying the ritual fire.

The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr. Digvijay Singh, the Rajasthan Governor, Mr. Anshuman Singh, the Madhya Pradesh Governor, Dr. Bhai Mahavir, the Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh Chief Ministers, Mr. Ashok Gehlot, Mr. Rajnath Singh and Mr. Ajit Jogi, attended the funeral.
